10 Seconds of Endurance

In an episode of the Netflix program The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, Kimmy explains how she can endure anything by saying, "I learned a long time ago that a person can stand just about anything for 10 seconds, then you just start on a new 10 seconds. All you've got to do is take it 10 seconds at a time." While this time unit may not work in most situations, the idea behind this principle is more philosophical than the premise of the show might suggest.

I have been living with depression since October, 2003, and in August, 2016 I was additionally diagnosed with anxiety. As I have evolved as a person from my 14 year old self, so have my illnesses and therefore my coping mechanisms. Somedays I struggle just to pull back the covers, while others there are physically too many things that I want to accomplish all at once. This concept of breaking up hard situations into manageable pieces has helped me get through the past few years, if not happily then at least passably. However, this technique took me many years of struggling to find.

My hope for this blog is to create a community of people experiencing or living with mental health problems who can share the everyday realities of what they are going through, and to help each other find ways of coping and thriving. I want to create the community I needed when I was a confused 16 year old being told her migraines were being cause by depression and had no idea what the hell to do with that.

I am the first to admit that I will by no means have all of the answers, but I hope to have an open, honest, and respectful conversation that people from all walks of life can contribute to and learn from.
