I was recently watching an episode of RuPaul's Drag Race (as I usually am in my free time), and the Queens kept telling one of the girls who has talked about her history of depression to "shake off" her emotions.
Um, I'm sorry, but that's not how this whole thing works.
Since coming to terms with and accepting my diagnosis of depression, I have been working to explain to people how my brain works differently than others. It's not that I don't want to get out of bed, it's that I physically cannot. Just the other day my depression hit me like a brick wall, and it felt like there was a 50lb weight covering my body and keeping me glued to my bed.
I know that not everyone is going to be able to completely understand how depression works in the mind when they don't have it, just like I'm never going to completely understand calculus (just ask my AP exam). But you can still be sympathetic to the issue and the person. Because I don't care how many times you play that sing, I cannot just shake, shake, shake off my depression.
